Universities of Hessen in the North-South Context

A Challenge in the Age of Globalisation

Since 1999, the World University Service (WUS) has been providing the homepage on ‘Hessian Universities in the North-South context’ on behalf of the Hessen State Ministry of Higher Education, Research and the Arts (HMWK). Through this portal, which is unique in Germany, the HMWK supports the international orientation of science and research policy in Hessen with special consideration given to Africa, Asia and Latin America. German and foreign students, university employees and employees involved in business as well as other interested people can use this homepage to access specific information and activities regarding developing countries, offered by universities of Hessen.

The different services concerning the North-South context in Hessen varies depending on university and department. Nevertheless, more and more academics, scientists as well as students are working on subjects related to the North-South context and therefore supportin actively for ‘sustainability in a global world’. Their involvement promotes international exchange as well as networking processes, and serves as a guideline for the further expansion of university profiles oriented towards development policies within the scope of the UN Decade of ‘Education for Sustainable Development’.
